Frightfully Creative Pumpkin Ideas
October is here and it’s time to begin brainstorming for Halloween. For many, pumpkin decorating is one of the most popular Halloween traditions. Unfortunately for many of us, being required to cut, chisel, and whittle beautiful designs often results in pumpkin stabbings (I kid you not, I stabbed a pumpkin once after hours- err, okay minutes- of frustration).
No need to fret, my little pets. There are many fascinating and creative ways to decorate pumpkins without being a pumpkin artist.
For example, if you are more of a baker like me then you can put all of those cookie cutters to good use.
Oh yes, the Halloween gods have answered my prayers. Create clean designs without the stab marks by using cookie cutters. Read more about it here.
If you don’t have cookie cutters, or want to avoid cutting into the pumpkin altogether, then decorate a pumpkin using supplies from the hardware store.
It’s pretty, but edgy at the same time. Read about it here.
Or… for a softer look simply use some glue and ribbon.
This could not get any easier. See the DIY details here.
If you have kids, or you are simply immature like me, then perhaps a mummy pumpkin might tickle your fancy.
See how to create it here.
For a more mature look, try this decoupage pumpkin.
This is perfect for entertaining and indoor décor.

Speaking of decoupage, may as well recycle some of your old newspapers too, while you’re at it.
That is pretty darn cute. Read the detailed tutorial here.
Double dip your holidays by reusing holiday lights.
This would be stunning to walk up to at night. Learn how to make these celestial pumpkins here.
With a minimal amount of carving and less mess, you can create a mouse motel. I’m sorry but mice are much creepier than ghosts.
That is too funny. See how here.
Spray paint works wonders. Especially when the end results look like candy.
Whoever thought of this is a genius. Learn how to make candy corn pumpkins here.
If you crave a more modern look, then make this centerpiece for your home.
Very clean. Would not last in my kitchen. See how to create modern pumpkins here.
This is my favorite by far. Fanged pumpkins.
I seriously want to adopt this little guy and take him home. I mean, really. Epic pumpkin right there.

I couldn’t allow you to leave me without suggesting a couple ideas of my own.
Rather than decoupage with leaves or newspapers, go for a more romantic look with lace.
What you need:
-pumpkins
-Modge Podge (also known as decoupage), a glue that you can find in any art supply store
-lace ribbon, also found in art supply stores
- Cut the ribbon into small pieces
- Use either a sponge, paint brush, or your fingers to dab modge podge onto a piece of lace.
- Press it onto the pumpkin, adding more modge podge until the lace stays on.
- Continue to add lace until the entire pumpkin is covered.
- Allow pumpkin to dry.
I used my fingers, because I felt as though I had the most control. The downside is that it was messy, but once the glue dries you only have to peel it off so it really was not that bad.
Going for more of a glitz and glam look? Switch the lace with some rhinestones.
What you need:
-pumpkin
-a large quantity of rhinestones
-Modge Podge or a glue that works well for the outdoors
- Apply a small dab of glue at a time to the pumpkin.
- Using your hands or tweezers, press rhinestones into the glue into whatever design you prefer.
- Allow pumpkin to dry.
…and the rhinestone pumpkins. My friend saw this photograph and said it could also work for a Halloween wedding. People get married on Halloween?
